Austin in the Running for $10 Billion Samsung Chipmaking Plant

Updated: Apr 24, 2021

In October, Samsung Electronics Co. U.S. branch purchased land right next to its existing Austin fab. Shortly after, in December, meeting minutes shared The Austin City Council discussed a request from Samsung to rezone that parcel of land for industrial development.

The cost for building this advanced logic chipmaking plant in Austin would be more than $10 billion but Samsung is hoping it will help it compete with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and create better deals with American clients. TSMC is focused on its own chip plant in Arizona planned for 2024 which would cost $12 billion. Samsung's hope is to become the largest competitor in the $400 billion chip industry.

"It plans to invest $116 billion into its foundry and chip design businesses over the next decade, aiming to catch TSMC by offering chips made using 3-nanometer technology in 2022."
