Crystal Dynamics, the producer of Marvel’s Avengers and the Tomb Raider Trilogy, has launched a development studio in Austin called Crystal Southwest. the company announced. Dallas Dickinson will take the helm of the Texas office, with the Austin studio playing a major role in the current and future development of Crystal Dynamics titles, according to a tweet from May 26th.
Dickinson joins the Texas outfit after serving as an executive producer with Crystal Dynamics for nearly two years, and previously as president and CEO of QC Games, an Austin developer of online games. Dickinson was also director of production and senior producer at video game company BioWare.
“The initial team in Austin, made up of Crystal Dynamics veterans, is already hard at work,” Crystal Dynamics shared on Twitter, as well as announcing plans to ramp up its hiring efforts in the city.
Austin has become a leading gaming hub, with GameDesigning.org ranking the city fifth for best cities for aspiring game designers, and is home to 75 game-oriented studios.
Austin also ranks sixth on the list of top cities for careers in gaming. In 2020, Austin was given the number 6 spot on WalletHub’s list of best cities for gamers, edging out San Francisco.
“While the city hosts dozens of smaller and independent companies working on games and gaming technology, not to mention extension offices of heavy hitters like Blizzard, BioWare, and EA, less well-known is the fact that much of the way that games are played and designed originated in Austin,” according to South by Southwest (SXSW).
