Texas Business Hall of Fame - A Q&A with CEO of Vari, Jason McCann

Texas Innovators was honored to be invited to the Texas Business Hall of Fame (TBHF) Third Annual Scholar Alumni Association Breakfast back in October of this year. The spectacular event occurred at the Stemmons Ballroom at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.

The breakfast came on the heels of the TBHF’s 38th annual Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, which featured Mark Cuban, John Paul DeJoria, John C. Goff, Morton H. Meyerson, Gerald Smith, and Randall L. Stephenson.

During the breakfast, the TBHF presented awards for its Outstanding High School Entrepreneur Award and the Distinguished Alumni Award, with the latter honoring TBHF alumni and Co-Founder/CEO of Vari Jason McCann.

Texas Innovators was able to experience the wonderful conversation led by Tom Foster, editor at large for Texas Monthly and Inc. Magazine, and McCann as they explored his journey that led to the creation of the revolutionary standing desk.

D Magazine recently recognized Jason McCann as D CEO’s 2021 CEO of the Year. A true Texas innovator, along with his co-founder Dan Flaherty, whose back issues while sitting at his desk after a cycling accident led the two to develop a standing desk converter for traditional desks, leading to the phenom that has become Vari.

Their success is attributed to their decision to leverage a direct-to-consumer approach, launching shortly after sitting was dubbed “the new smoking” in a 2012 article by the Wall Street Journal. After finding that the inner workings of the traditional office furniture industry were antiquated, the duo launched via B2C eCommerce, later adding B2B in 2014. Since launching in 2013, Vari has done about $2 billion in sales.
