Cole’s Crypto Corner: NFTs and Web3 on Display at SXSW, Featuring Blockchain Creative Labs

Updated: Apr 6

SXSW was one for the books! Be on the lookout for more coverage on the innovations in Web3, blockchain, and NFTs.

This week, I am at SXSW, covering a variety of innovations in the crypto space, one of the main focuses being NFTs and the work of Blockchain Creative Labs, an official partner of SXSW.

Some of the biggest news coming out of Blockchain Creative Labs (BCL) is the release of Dolly Parton's "Dollyverse," an immersive Web3 experience to promote her first novel "Run, Rose, Run," co-written with best-selling author James Patterson, as well as the accompanying album.

“There’s almost nothing more important to me than connecting with my fans. And I’m almost always up for trying something new and different,” Parton said. “I'd say releasing NFTs at my first ever appearance at SXSW, with James Patterson by my side, definitely counts as new and different!”

Earn NFTS, Digital Assets Through BCL at SXSW

SXSW was NFTs galore through the work of BCL. But then comes the question, "what is an NFT?"

An NFT, or "non-fungible token," is a digital asset housed on the blockchain. The beauty of NFTs is they can be entirely digital, or they can be physical assets where the ownership is directly reflected in the immutable ledger of a blockchain ecosystem, whether that be Ethereum, Solana, Tezos, or in the case of BCL, Polygon network (MATIC), a blockchain protocol built on Ethereum.

NFTs wouldn't be possible without the development of the OG crypto, Bitcoin. As I have stressed in past writings, we are where we are today because of the innovations of pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto.

The NFT space and adoption of blockchain protocols are rapidly emerging, and BCL is positioning itself to be a leader in the space for digital art. BCL is a FOX Entertainment Company, so the possibilities for content production and developments are intriguing.

Web3 and blockchain are becoming foundational to holding digital assets and interacting with the digital ecosystem. The gap between the analog and the digital worlds is being bridged through both technologies.

Adding to the NFTs galore is BCL's partnership with SXSW to provide Proof of Attendance Protocol (PoAP) NFTs. There will be QR codes through SXSW shows that enable you to access event-specific NFTs, opening a world to an SXSW NFT marketplace. No longer do you have to hold on to your ticket stubs as memorabilia, BCL has made it so that you have an NFT to remember your experience from a live show.

The Future of Art Is Unfolding Before Our Eyes

Not only is the way we consume art changing, but the way we own and interact with art is elevating to places never before imagined. The bounds of the physical world no longer limit us to immerse ourselves into the art and the minds of creators. Creators express themselves in new ways, and we are consuming those creations in a way that allows artists to develop their creative expression continually. There is still a lot to learn about the opportunities that NFTs present, but that's life, a journey of learning and discovery.

Stay tuned for more SXSW developments and more in-depth discussions of NFTs, where we are, and where we will be next!

NFTs weren't the only thing I have my eyes on. There was a variety of blockchain and Bitcoin-focused events that I attended, namely "Bitcoin Defi - The Latest Developments," featuring some of my favorites, Dan Held and Anthony Pompliano.

Be on the lookout for more, such as the featured session with NFT legend, Beeple.
